Show your shoes some love
As if selecting the perfect pair of shoes wasn’t hard enough already, you’re then bombarded with an array of must have accessories. But do you really need a wire brush? And why on earth do I need Vaseline with a pair of Ballroom shoes? Here is our guide to maintaining your shoes, and which accessories you really do need
How to clean your shoes
In order to keep your shoes looking and smelling fresh, we recommend using an odour remover spray on the insoles (Scholl do a good one), or a more sustainable option; odour absorbing bags that can be placed inside of the shoes after dancing.
For men’s shoes, a simple patent or leather shoe cleaner and brush is sufficient.
For ladies’ shoes, leather cleaner works well on leather shoes, and a soft brush should revive nubuck suede shoes.
Satin shoes are notoriously hard to keep clean, and I’m yet to find a satin shoe cleaner on the market that actually works! But a soft toothbrush, mild detergent, and warm water can breathe some life back into them – however, don’t attempt this if your shoes have been dyed from white to another colour.
Maintaining your shoes
We recommend buying a wire shoe brush alongside your shoes. This will help rejuvenate the suede sole. You do not need to use it every time, just when you notice a build-up of dirt or if you shoes are starting to feel a bit slippery.
To make your shoes go that little bit further, replacement suede soles and heel tips can be purchased from dance shoe manufacturers and replaced by most cobblers.
Heel protectors are an essential purchase… for BALLROOM shoes! There is absolutely no need to buy heel protectors for your Latin shoes. Due to the nature of Latin dancing, the heel will only wear down a little over time. However, these are a must have when it comes to Ballroom dancing; not only to prolong the life of your heels but also to ensure you do not damage the floor. We always recommend getting the protectors with the suede bottoms as they last longer than just plastic. Don’t forget to make sure you check what type of heel you have as they come in different shapes and sizes!
Why do I need Vaseline? What is this little black sponge in the shoebox?
If purchasing a pair of patent shoes it is vital that you use the little black sponge included (or a thumb of Vaseline) around the shoes. When your feet close, the patent sticks together, quite spectacularly, so this ensures that when your feet close or touch they glide seamlessly.
One last piece of advice – never wear your dance shoes outdoors or away from the dance floor!
